Melbourn Teen Killed, Four others Injured in Florida Tread Separation Accident
A 15-year-old from Melbourne Florida died in a car accident when the SUV he was riding in endured tread separation, causing the vehicle to lose control before striking another vehicle and rolling over on I-95, Florida police said.
Officials identified the young man as Brand Fritz. The driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe was identified as Zachary Roy, 16, also of Melbourne. Four other teens were passengers in the SUV. They were all transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for serious injuries resulting from the tread separation accident.
The other teens injured in the defective tire accident were identified as Lucious McKay, 17, Dymond Thomas, 15 and Alexander Hartfield, 15, all of Palm Bay, Florida. In addition, Michael McCauley, 15, of Melbourne, Florida was also seriously injured in the I-95 rollover accident.
Florida police reported that Roy and McKay may have been the only occupants wearing seatbelts at the time of the tread separation accident.
The driver of the other vehicle involved, a Mazda, was identified as Ronald D’Haeseleer, a resident of Vero Beach. Officials did not reveal his condition.
Tread separation accidents can strike at any time, giving driver and passengers very little time to react and often sparking loss of control. Rollover accidents resulting from tread separation or tire blowouts are a common result, especially when the tread separation occurs on the rear tires. Rear tire tread separation makes it very difficult for the driver of a vehicle to sustain control, causing collisions with other cars, trucks and SUV’s as well as single vehicle rollovers.
